Learn moreCommon Questions
The following conditions are among the most common reasons patients seek care at our clinics. Each requires specialized evaluation — not a general practitioner or an urgent care visit.
What causes persistent ringing in the ears?
Tinnitus — the perception of sound without an external source — is most often caused by noise exposure, hearing loss, or changes in the auditory nerve. A formal audiological evaluation is necessary to identify the underlying cause and guide treatment.
When should dizziness be evaluated by a specialist?
Recurring dizziness, vertigo, or a sensation of the room spinning warrants evaluation by a vestibular audiologist or neuro-otologist. Many balance disorders — including BPPV — are highly treatable when properly diagnosed.
How is hearing loss diagnosed and treated?
Audiologists use a battery of tests including pure-tone audiometry, speech discrimination, and middle ear assessment to determine the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss. Treatment ranges from hearing aids to aural rehabilitation therapy.
What is auditory processing disorder (APD)?
APD is a neurological condition in which the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting auditory information, despite normal hearing sensitivity. Symptoms include trouble following conversations in noise and difficulty with verbal instructions. A specialized audiological assessment is required for diagnosis.
Can concussion affect hearing and balance?
Yes. Traumatic brain injury and concussion can disrupt both auditory and vestibular pathways, resulting in dizziness, tinnitus, sound sensitivity, and hearing changes. Our interdisciplinary team evaluates and treats these symptoms together.
What is hyperacusis or sound sensitivity?
Hyperacusis is an abnormal sensitivity to sounds at levels most people tolerate easily. It may occur alongside tinnitus or hearing loss. Desensitization therapy and sound enrichment programs are among the effective treatment approaches we offer.
